Dover at Night - family-friendly trail

Explore historic sites and creative spaces the length of the High Street as we celebrate Dover's rich heritage through stories, light projections and fun art activities! Create your own sketch book, 'stained glass' window, shadow puppets and gargoyles. Find out about the the Maison Dieu project and see wall paintings conservators, stained-glass artists and Raku potters at work. Pick up a trail sheet from Dover Museum or download here from 16 March onwards. Free drop-in event for all ages.

Visit venues in any order. There’s no advance booking necessary (except for the Dover Youth Theatre performance, book this at Dover at Night: Fire, Frights, Cooks and Crooks)

Getting to Dover at Night
All venues are no more than 10 to 15 mins level walk from Dover Priory Railway Station. All are close to town centre bus routes. There are several town centre car parks. Car Parks in Dover

Venues and activities

1. Charlton Shopping Centre, High Street, CT16 1TT

Downstairs activities: Sketchbook making (Artswork), dragon storytelling (Kevin Groves), meet the hooden chough, create a chough craft activity (Kent Wildlife Trust). Stamp Zone.

Upstairs activities: Giant illuminated Winter Light-Up animals (Future Foundry), History of Pride film and drag queen costumes (Dover Pride). Please note no lift available, 1 flight of steps to reach first floor activities. 

2. Maison Dieu (Dover Town Hall)

Activities: Look at this incredible building as you walk past! It’s currently closed for redevelopment and re-opens in 2025. Several activities at other venues are inspired by its history and stories.

3. St Edmund’s Chapel, Priory Road, CT16 1BB

Activities: History of the Ladywell Spring art installation (textile artist Jenni Cresswell). Stamp Zone. St. Please note 4 steps down to entrance.

4. Biggin Hall, Biggin Street, CT16 1BD

Activities: Create a glow in the dark graffiti mural (Tim Smithen of Rebel Coffee), Dover at Night art zone (Artswork), Stamp Zone.

5. The Riverside Centre, Maison Dieu Gardens, CT16 1RL

Activities: Dover at Night card-making, digital projections, refreshments (Riverside Centre team). Stamp Zone.

6. St Mary’s Church, Cannon Street, CT16 1BY

Activities: the story of the Good Samaritan stained-glass window, church tours and candle-carving (St Mary’s Church team), conserving the Maison Dieu stained-glass windows (Easthope Stained Glass), conserving the Maison Dieu wall paintings (Arte Conservation), the William Burges crozier (Canterbury Cathedral), stained-glass window making for kids (EKC Dover College), digital projections in the church and Parish Rooms window, refreshments. Stamp Zone.

7. The Art Club, 27 Market Square, CT16 1NG

Activities outside: Raku pottery firing (Ceramic Art Dover), digital projection.
Activities inside: Lighting effects, music, bar, refreshments. Stamp Zone.

8. Market Square, CT16 1NU

Activities: Experimental sound art by Cherif Hashizume and Pleistocene Megafauna. Dancing by The Fuddlers. Dover at Night event info. Sketching activities. Stamp Zone.

9. Dover Museum, Market Square, CT16 1PH

Dover Museum shop: Collect trail sheets, Stamp Zone, prize collection.
Ground floor activities: Dover Society, Kent-Maps-Online, digital projection. Zine display.
First floor activities:  Kent Downs AONB, digital projections. 
Top floor activities: Torchlit gallery tours, Astor Secondary School artwork, digital projection. 
Education Room: shadow-puppet making.

10. Community Cinema. Gaol Lane, CT16 1PH

Activities: Fire, Frights, Cooks and Crooks - Dover Youth Theatre performance inspired by the night-time history of Dover’s Maison Dieu. Arrive at Gaol Lane entrance from 6.15pm onwards, for 6.30pm to 7pm show. Advance booking only. Book here: Dover at Night: Fire, Frights, Cooks and Crook

11. Dover SmART, Bench St, CT16 1JH

Activities: Stained-glass window display by young carers. Art activities at the VW camper van. Stamp Zone.

Digital Projections
Digital projections representing positive Values for Dover, have been created by local schools. They’re inspired by painted niches in the Mayor’s Parlour at the Maison Dieu, which may originally have depicted figures of The Virtues. Projections will be shown between 5pm to 9pm at venues across town. Full details will appear on the Dover at Night trail sheet.

Toilets
There are toilets at the Charlton Centre, Riverside Centre, St Mary’s Parish Rooms and Dover Museum.

Refreshments
Tea, Coffee, hot chocolate, cold drinks and biscuits are available at St Mary’s Church, the Riverside Centre and The Art Café.
