Stained-Glass Windows tour (45 mins)

The Maison Dieu includes some of the finest Victorian stained-glass in the UK. Discover colourful stories from Dover history, from the Siege of Dover Castle in 1215 to the Restoration of Charles II and Henry VIII on board ship on his way to The Field of Cloth of Gold. Learn about the thrilling discovery of over 60 fragments of medieval stained-glass, top designers including Edward John Poynter and Horatio Walter Lonsdale, and the painstaking cleaning and conservation of the windows by Easthope Stained Glass.

Dragons, Ghosts and Gargoyles - Family-friendly tour (35 mins)

Enjoy a fun, family-friendly tour as we explore the humorous, ridiculous, scary and often smelly story of Dover’s Maison Dieu. Find out about pilgrims, ghosts, prisoners, animals and royal visitors. Play medieval smells roulette, dress in historic costume, take part in a dragon hunt, get locked in a cell and impersonate a gargoyle!

Maison Dieu tactile and multi-sensory tour (45 mins)

Discover the story of the Maison Dieu through the senses of touch, smell, sight and sound. Investigate animal carvings, colourful stained glass and building details. Discover pleasant and malodorous medieval smells and the sounds of the organ, singing, speechmaking and the Victorian gaol. This audio-described, fully accessible tour is suitable for all, and especially for people with sight loss. This tour may be combined with an artefact handling session.
